You've exported your passwords. Now it's time to bring them into your new password manager.

Before You Import

Make sure you have:

Haven't exported yet? Go back to how to export first.

General Import Steps

Like export, the exact steps vary by manager. The general process:

  1. Open your new password manager
Use the desktop app or web vault. Mobile apps often don't support import.
  2. Find the import option
Usually in Settings, Tools, or a welcome wizard. Look for "Import," "Import Data," or "Migrate."
  3. Select your source
Most managers let you choose which manager you're importing from. This helps format the data correctly.
  4. Upload your export file
Select the CSV or JSON file you saved earlier.
  5. Review the preview
Some managers show what will be imported. Check that it looks correct.
  6. Complete the import
Confirm and wait. Large vaults may take a minute.

Manager-Specific Instructions

Select your new password manager for specific steps:

Importing into NordPass

NordPass offers a straightforward import process from all major password managers. Import works from the desktop app or browser extension.

  1. Download and install NordPass
Get the NordPass app for your computer and browser. Create an account if you haven't already.
  2. Open NordPass Settings
Click your profile icon in the bottom left, then select "Settings".
  3. Go to Import & Export
In the Settings menu, find and click "Import & Export" in the sidebar.
  4. Select your source
Click "Import items" and choose where you're importing from. NordPass recognizes CSV files from LastPass, 1Password, Bitwarden, Dashlane, Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and many others.
  5. Upload your export file
Click "Browse" and select the CSV file you exported earlier. NordPass will scan and preview your data.
  6. Review and confirm
Check that passwords, usernames, and URLs look correct in the preview. Click "Import" to complete.
  7. Organize (optional)
After import, you can organize items into folders. NordPass will also suggest removing weak or duplicate passwords.
NordPass import features

NordPass handles special characters well and preserves notes from most password managers. If you're importing from LastPass, it also brings over secure notes and credit cards.

Importing into 1Password

1Password import is available through the desktop app and web vault at 1password.com.

  1. Sign into 1Password
Open the 1Password app or go to 1password.com and sign in.
  2. Open the import tool
    Desktop: File → Import
Web: Click your name → Import
  3. Select your previous manager
Choose where you're importing from (LastPass, Bitwarden, Chrome, etc.). 1Password formats the import accordingly.
  4. Upload your file
    Select your CSV export file.
  5. Choose destination vault
Select which vault to import into (Personal, Family, etc.).
  6. Complete import
Click Import and wait for processing. Large vaults may take a minute.
1Password import notes

1Password's import from CSV is limited to basic login items. For secure notes, documents, and other item types, you'll need to recreate them manually or use 1Password's direct import from specific managers.

Importing into Bitwarden

Bitwarden import works best through the web vault at vault.bitwarden.com.

  1. Log into the Bitwarden web vault
Go to vault.bitwarden.com and sign in.
  2. Navigate to Tools → Import data
In the top menu, click "Tools" then "Import data".
  3. Select import format
Choose your previous password manager from the dropdown (LastPass, 1Password, Dashlane, Chrome, etc.).
  4. Upload or paste your data
Either browse to select your file or paste the CSV contents directly.
  5. Click Import data
Bitwarden processes the file and shows how many items were imported.
Bitwarden organization import

If you're importing into a Bitwarden organization (for team use), select the organization from the dropdown before importing. Personal and organization items are kept separate.

Importing into Proton Pass

Proton Pass import works through the browser extension, web app, or Windows app.

  1. Install the Proton Pass browser extension
Get the Proton Pass extension for your browser. Create an account or sign in with your existing Proton account.
  2. Open Settings
Click the menu icon (☰) in the extension, then select "Settings".
  3. Go to the Import tab
In Settings, find and click the "Import" tab.
  4. Select your previous manager
Choose your source from the "Provider" dropdown. Proton Pass recognizes CSV files from LastPass, 1Password, Bitwarden, Dashlane, Keeper, NordPass, Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and others.
  5. Upload your export file
Drag your CSV file into the upload area or click to browse. Select the file you exported earlier.
  6. Click Import
Proton Pass processes the file and imports your passwords.
Proton Pass import notes

Proton Pass encrypts all fields — not just passwords, but usernames, URLs, and notes too. It handles CSV imports from most managers cleanly, including special characters and notes. If you already have a Proton Mail or VPN account, you can use the same login. Import is also available from the web app at pass.proton.me.

  1. Log into Keeper
Go to keepersecurity.com/vault or open the desktop app.

  4. Choose your source
Select the password manager you're importing from.
  5. Upload your file
Select your CSV export and complete the import.

If your manager isn't listed, the general steps usually apply. Check your manager's help documentation.

Verifying Your Import

After import completes, verify everything transferred correctly:

  1. Compare counts
Check how many items imported vs. how many you had. A small difference (1-5%) is normal due to duplicates or empty entries.
  2. Test critical accounts
Log into your 3-5 most important accounts (email, banking) using the new manager. Confirm passwords work.
  3. Spot-check random entries
Pick 5-10 random passwords and verify the website URLs match.
  4. Check for duplicates
If you see multiple entries for the same site, you'll clean these up next.

Handling Duplicates

Duplicates are common if:

How to Clean Up

Most managers have a "duplicate finder" or similar tool. If not:

  1. Sort your vault alphabetically by site name
  2. Review entries with similar names
  3. Keep the most recent or most complete entry
  4. Delete the extras

Don't rush this. It's fine to clean duplicates over the next week as you encounter them.

What If Passwords Don't Work?

If some passwords don't work after import:

Don't panic — this is recoverable

You still have your old password manager with the original passwords. Log in there to verify the correct password, then update the entry in your new manager.

Common causes:

After Successful Import

Once you've verified the import:

  1. Delete the export file
Move it to trash, then empty trash. Don't leave unencrypted passwords sitting around.
  2. Set up browser extension
Install your new manager's browser extension for autofill.
  3. Set up mobile app
Configure your new manager on your phone.
  4. Don't delete old manager yet
Keep your old password manager installed for 2-4 weeks as a backup. Once you're confident everything works, you can remove it.
