Password Migration Guide

You've decided to switch password managers — maybe you're leaving LastPass, maybe something else. This site helps you do it safely, without losing access to your accounts or your mind.

Most people who visit this site have been thinking about switching for weeks or months. That's not laziness — switching feels like a bigger deal than it actually is. The hardest part is opening this page. The actual process is about 30 minutes.

I'm not here to rank password managers or sell you on one option. I've helped dozens of people through this process — friends, family, clients — and I've seen what goes wrong. The most common response afterward: "That was way easier than I expected." This guide is what I wish existed when I started helping people migrate.

Your passwords don't disappear

When you export, you're making a copy. Your old manager keeps everything. You'll run both side by side until you're confident. There's no point of no return.

Who This Is For

If you're a large organization with IT staff, you probably need enterprise documentation, not this guide.

How Long This Takes

For most people with fewer than 200 passwords, the whole process takes 30-60 minutes:

More passwords or shared vaults will take longer. That's fine—take your time.

Begin with the pre-migration checklist. If you haven't chosen your new password manager yet, see how to choose first.

Haven't chosen your new manager yet?

Most people switching from LastPass or another manager end up choosing between NordPass, 1Password, or Bitwarden. I cover the differences on the choosing page.

How This Site Stays Free

This guide may include affiliate links. If you click through and sign up for a service, I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. That said, my recommendations are based on what fits your situation—not what pays me more.

I don't cover every password manager. I focus on the ones most people are actually considering, with enough detail to help you migrate successfully.
